Math
The District 28 mathematics curriculum promotes opportunities for students to develop and apply basic math skills and solve problems confidently using a wide variety of strategies. By the end of Kindergarten, we expect students to be able to do the following within each area:
Estimation
*use the language of estimation
*use benchmarks of 5 and 10 to estimate
*make and revise estimates
Concepts and Computation
*recognize numerals 0-20
*know number sequence to 20
*use one-to-one correspondence when counting
*count backwards from 20
*explore the concepts of addition and subtraction
Fractions
*explore concepts of halves
*explore fractional parts of a whole
Algebra
*identify an existing pattern
*extend an existing pattern
*copy a pattern
*create own pattern
*recognize patterns in our number system
Geometry
*recognize and draw basic shapes
*sort objects by attribute
*develop and explain the criteria for classifying objects and shapes
Measurement
*compare the size of objects
*measure and compare the length, width, and area using standard and nonstandard units
*build an awareness of time intervals and elapsed time (hours, days, months, seasons, years)
Data Analysis and Probability
*classify objects by characteristics
*create, read, represent, and interpret data on a bar graph
*collect, record, organize, graph, and analyze data
Communication, Application, and Representation
*use mathematical language accurately
*organize and communicate math thinking effectively
*write numbers 1-10 correctly
Problem Solving and Reasoning
*develop patterns to solve problems (calendars, manipulatives)
*use math to solve problems in everyday activities
*build new math knowledge through problem solving
